Scripture writing is exactly what it sounds like: copying scripture verses by hand. You might be thinking, “I already have a Bible. Why would I want to copy it? That seems like such a waste of time!”

Actually, it’s not.

The Benefits of Writing Scripture

There are many benefits to writing out scripture verses:

Writing something (especially writing in cursive) stimulates areas of the brain;

The use of fine motor skills aids in retention and learning, which will help in scripture memorization;

Scripture writing takes time, allowing us to slow down, absorb and process what God is saying.

In Old Testament times, God even commanded the king of Israel to copy scripture. Deuteronomy 17:18-20 says, “When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.”

So the king was instructed to copy the scriptures, keep them close to him, and read them every day. Sounds like what we call daily devotions, right? Doing this would teach him respect for God, as he obeyed what God said. It would also keep him humble (something sadly lacking in many leaders). And there’s even a promise connected to this: both he and his descendants would have long reigns. Any leader would consider that a pretty good incentive!

The Renewal of Your Mind

Romans 12:2 tells us that we are transformed by the renewing of our mind. That’s the battlefield where victories are won. We need to tear down the lies and accusations of the enemy, and replace them with the truth of God’s Word. Scripture writing is an excellent way to do just that. “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)

Scripture writing will bring encouragement and hope as we marinate our minds in God’s truth: “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4)

When it comes to scripture writing, all you really need is your Bible, some type of notebook, and a pen. Of course you can get as creative as you like: a fancy journal, colored pens, stickers, elaborately drawn borders– have some fun with it! Scripture writing can be a part of your daily quiet time with God.

A Testimony of Transformation

I can personally attest to the transformational power of scripture writing. I came to Christ with a mind and heart that were savagely scarred from years of rejection, bullying, and verbal and emotional abuse. Satan had filled my thoughts with lies which controlled me. I desperately needed my mind to be renewed. That began as I started reading my Bible and listening to the Word of God being preached. But I was biblically illiterate, and the process was slow.

I began reading books by people like Joyce Meyer and Neil Anderson, which helped me to understand what was going on in my mind. Neil Anderson had a handout called “Who I Am In Christ,” which was a list of scriptures and affirmations about our identity in Christ. (You can find a copy by doing a Google search).

I kept the handout in my Bible for many years. I began to recite the affirmations every day: “I am God’s child,” “I am a saint,” “I am free forever from condemnation,” and so on. I also began to write out the scripture verses that accompanied the affirmations, both in a composition book and on 3×5 cards to carry in my pocket. Gradually these truths from scripture became cemented in my mind, and little by little the negative misbeliefs became dislodged. My mind began to be renewed.

Today my mental mindset and self image are totally different. I found freedom in Christ, and scripture writing played a part in my transformation.

Begin Your Scripture Writing Adventure!

There are many ways you can begin your scripture writing adventure. You can use a concordance to look up scriptures on a certain theme, such as faith or the fruit of the Spirit.

There are also many places online where you can get Scripture writing plans built around certain themes. This is perhaps the quickest way to get started, so I will give you a number of sources here. This is by no means an exhaustive list, though. If there’s a certain topic you’d like to explore, you can just search on Google for a scripture writing plan for it.

Here are some resources you may enjoy:

swtblessings.com is a blog with a large variety of themed scripture writing plans. Hey, I’m a guy, and it worked for me. It will work for you, too, regardless of your gender!

So if you have “junk in the trunk” like I did, add scripture writing to the tools in your recovery toolbox.
